Step-by-Step Guide: CATIA V5 Import for SolidWorks

You can import CATIA V5 files (.CATPart and .CATProduct) directly into SOLIDWORKS using two built-in methods: 3D Interconnect (which maintains a live link to the original file) and Standard Import (which converts the geometry into independent SOLIDWORKS files).

Please note that native CATIA V5 file translation typically requires a SOLIDWORKS Premium or Ultimate license, or a 3DEXPERIENCE SOLIDWORKS package. Method 1: Using 3D Interconnect (Recommended)

This method inserts the CATIA file as a component. It maintains an associative link back to the native file, meaning if the original CATIA model changes, your SOLIDWORKS model automatically prompts you to update. Open SOLIDWORKS. Navigate to Tools > Options > System Options > Import.

Under the General settings, check the box for Enable 3D Interconnect, then click OK. Go to File > Open.

In the Files of type dropdown menu, select CATIA V5 (*.catpart;.catproduct). Browse to your file, select it, and click Open.

The geometry will appear in your feature tree with an external reference icon (a green arrow), confirming the live link. Method 2: Standard Import (Breaks the Link)

If you want to modify the geometry independently in SOLIDWORKS without updates from the original file affecting your work, use the Standard Import. Go to Tools > Options > System Options > Import. Uncheck the box for Enable 3D Interconnect and click OK. Go to File > Open. Set the file type dropdown to CATIA V5. Select your file and click Open.

SOLIDWORKS will convert the CATIA model into independent solid bodies (.sldprt) or assemblies (.sldasm).
